Memory Verse: Hebrews 12:2
Life Application: We must acknowledge Jesus’ sacrifice.
Jesus’ entire life centers around sacrifice and pleasing the Father through sacrifice. Jesus’ attention was not on the pain and agonies of the Cross, but on the joy that it would bring the Father. Jesus thought on the reward instead of the suffering.
Hebrews 12:2 NKJV
“looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Jesus sacrificed just to come to this earth.
Jesus left a home in glory to come to a world filled with sin. He left the presence of His Father. Jesus made know God the Father by completing the work that God sent Him to do. Jesus looked forward with anticipation to the Father restoring Him to the glory He had in heaven before He came to the earth.
John 17:4-5 NKJV
“I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”
Jesus sacrificed while here on earth.
Jesus sacrificed many things while here on earth for each one of us.
Philippians 2:5-8 NKJV
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
Jesus sacrificed the comforts of a home. A home is a place of privacy and security. A person can rest and feel safe in their own home. In your home you receive the love and encouragement of your own family.
Matthew 8:20 NKJV
“And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.’”
Luke 9:58 NKJV
“And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.’ ”
Jesus was rejected by many. When you reject someone, you refuse to believe them or what they have to say. The things that they say are thought to be useless or unsatisfactory. In essence, the person is “thrown away.” Throughout the Bible, Jesus is pictured as a stone that was thrown away, discarded, then later used as the most important stone, the chief cornerstone.
Psalm 118:22 NKJV
“The stone that the builder’s rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.”
Matthew 21:42 NKJV
“Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone
This was the Lord’s doing
And it is marvelous in our eyes.’”
Jesus was ridiculed and mocked. When a person is ridiculed they are laughed at and made fun of. Their words and actions are laughed at scornfully. They are made light of, and imitated in a despiteful way.
Matthew 27: 27 NKJV
“Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.”
Matthew 27:41-43 NKJV
“Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, ‘He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
Jesus was hated by many while here on earth. He was disliked and detested. He encountered hostility everywhere He went. He suffered much hurt and harm on our behalf.
Hebrews 12:3 NKJV
“For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls”
Jesus was acquainted with grief. He experienced great sadness and heavy sorrow while trying to reach out to man in love.
Isaiah 53:3 NKJV
“He is despised and rejected by men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him, He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.”
Jesus was despised by man. Everywhere He went He encountered scorn.
Isaiah 49:7 NKJV
“Thus says the Lord,
The Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, To Him man despises,
To Him who the nation abhors,
To the Servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise,
Princes also shall worship,
Because of the Lord who is faithful,
The Holy One of Israel; And He has chosen You.”
Jesus suffered humiliation. Some people tried to make Him feel ashamed. He was struck on the back and He was stripped of His clothing. During this time period people that were thought to be fools were struck on the back.
Proverbs 19:29 NKJV
“Judgments are prepared for scoffers,
And beatings for the backs of fools.”
Jesus was treated with contempt. When you feel contempt for a person, you feel that the person is low and worthless. During the time of Jesus, if you cut a man’s hair it showed that you felt contempt for him.
Isaiah 50:6 NKJV
“I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting”
Jesus was tortured and beaten. When you torture someone you inflict very severe pain in hatred or revenge, as a means of extortion, or to force a person to confess. Man tried to force Jesus to say that He was not God’s Son by inflicting great pain upon Him.
John 19:1-3 NKJV
“So Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. Then they said, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ And they struck Him with their hands.”
Jesus was made poor. The offering that was given at His birth by Mary and Joseph was a poor man’s offering.
Luke 2:22-24 NKJV
“Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord’), and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.’ ”
Following the birth of Jesus, Joseph and Mary went to the temple in Jerusalem in accordance with the law. The offering that they gave was a pair of birds. Birds were given after the birth of a child if the parents could not afford to buy a lamb.
Leviticus 12:8 NKJV
“‘And if she is not able to bring a lamb, then she may bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons—one as a burnt offering and the other as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’”
Jesus made Himself low. He put aside the fact that He was the Master and became a servant. One example of this was when He washed disciples feet.
John 13:3-9 NKJV
“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciple’s feet, and to wipe them with the towel which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, are You washing my feet?’ Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” Peter said to Him, ‘You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, ‘If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.’ Simon Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!’ ”
It was the custom during this time for guests to have their feet washed before sitting down for a meal. The lowest servant or a slave was the person assigned to the task of washing the feet. During the Passover meal, Jesus Himself, got up from the table and washed the disciples feet. Jesus, the Master humbled Himself and became the servant.
Jesus sacrificed while on the cross.
Jesus suffered on the cross for the sins of all humanity. As Jesus hung on the cross, God the Father had to turn away from His Son. While Jesus was on the cross all of our sins were placed upon Him. He became our sin offering. God is a holy God and can not look upon sin, therefore He had to look away from His very own Son, Jesus Christ. As God turned away from Jesus it caused darkness to supernaturally cover the earth from the sixth hour until the ninth hours. For three hours darkness covered the earth.
Matthew 27:45-46 NKJV
“Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’”
Around the ninth hour, Jesus gave a loud cry of victory and then He yielded up His spirit. The purpose for Him coming to earth was fulfilled. Our redemption was accomplished. The price for our sins was paid in full.
Jesus is still sacrificing His will for the Father’s will.
Jesus is in heaven anxiously awaiting His bride, the church. He does not know when He will be able to come and take His bride – only the Father knows.
Matthew 24:36 NKJV
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”
Jesus has paid the price for His bride, prepared a home for her, and now He is waiting for the Father to tell Him when to sound the trumpet that will call her to the home prepared for her.
