THE LORDS PRAYER  The Lord’s Prayer

Memory Verse: Matthew 6:9

Life Application: Jesus gave us an example for prayer.

Bible Text: Matthew 6:9-13

Matthew 6:9-13  NKJV     “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Your is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

Jesus felt prayer was very important. He did a lot of it. He talked to His Father every day. He wanted us to know how to pray, so He gave us an example. We call it the Lord’s Prayer.

When Jesus prayed the prayer we find in Matthew 6, He had just been talking to His disciples about prayer. He told them that they should spend time alone talking to God, and He gave them an example.

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name means God is our Father and He is holy. We should begin our prayers by praising and adoring God.

“Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.” means  it is important that we want the same things God wants. We must want God’s will to be done.

“Give us this day our daily bread.” means that we should ask for what we need, and that God will provide what we need.
“And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.” means that if we want to be forgiven we must forgive others.
And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.” means  that God will never lead us into temptation. We should ask God to deliver us from Satan, the one who does tempt us.

“For Your is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”  means that we should end our prayers with praise to God.

God is a loving Father who wants to give good things to His children. All we have to do is ask and trust Him to give us His best.
