Adam and Eve had many sons and daughters but there first two children were sons. They are remembered most for the first murder. Cain and Abel were a contrast between good and evil. Abel obeyed God and was accepted of Him. Cain came up with his own idea and displeased God.
Genesis 4:1-2 NKJV “Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.”
Eve gave birth to her first son and named him Cain. Later she gave birth again to another son and she named him Abel. Abel, the younger brother, grew up to be a shepherd, while Cain pursued farming.
Genesis 4:3-4 NKJV “And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering”
One day Cain and Abel went to worship God. Each one brought his offering to God. Cain brought fruit and vegetables from his garden and Abel brought one of the best lambs from his flock.
The Lord was pleased with Abel and accepted his offering. God knew what was in Abel’s heart. Abel trusted God and wanted to please Him. His attitude and actions were right. Abel’s offering was the best that he had.
God was not pleased with Cain and his offering. God also knew what was in Cain’s heart and He knew that Cain’s actions and attitude were wrong. Cain wanted to do things his own way instead of God’s way. His offering reflected what was in his heart. Cain was upset at God because He would not accept his sacrifice though He accepted Abel’s offering. Cain was jealous of and angry at his brother Abel.
Genesis 4:5 NKJV “but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.”
God questioned Cain about his attitude and pleaded with him to “do well.” If Cain would change his attitude, believe in God, and do what He said, everything would be well. If not, Cain would have to face the consequences.
Genesis 4:6-7 NKJV “So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
Cain refused to accept God’s way. Instead, his heart hardened even more. One day as Cain and Abel were in the field, Cain was so overcome with jealously and anger that it led to him killing his brother, Abel.
Genesis 4:8 NKJV “Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.”
After the murder, God questioned Cain concerning the whereabouts of his brother. Cain did not admit to what he had done, instead he responded by lying to God. He said that he did not know where Abel was. Then Cain asked God, “Am I my brother’s keeper.”
God asked Cain what he had done. He told Cain, “Your brother’s blood cried out to Me from the ground.”
Genesis 4:9-10 NKJV “Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.”
When told of his consequences of his sin, Cain complained that his punishment was too great. Cain expressed his distress only at the punishment he was to receive, not at the crime that he had committed. There was no repentance or remorse toward his actions.
Genesis 4:11-16 NKJV “So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
“And Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear!”
“Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”
And the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.
Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.”
In God’s great mercy, He put a mark of protection on Cain.
Conclusion:
Instead of getting things right, Cain allowed anger and jealously to overcome him in such a way that it led him to murder his own brother.
God knows our hearts, our attitudes and our actions. The Bible tells us that the heart, the real you, is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked In order words our hearts are sinful.
Jeremiah 17:9-10 NKJV “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.”
Our flesh wants its own way. Everyone is born into sin – they have a sin nature. Every person has sinned.
1 John 1:8 NKJV “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
This world is still divided into those who submit to God’s plan and those who are determined to do things their own way. From Cain and Abel we can see the importance of doing things God’s way (obedience to God).
Each person should examine their heart and their attitude. When you do something wrong or sin you must accept responsibility – Don’t blame someone else. We must recognize the power and danger of sin. Sin causes sorrow, unhappiness and grief.
Sin separates you from God.
Romans 3:23 NKJV “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
Isaiah 59:2 NKJV “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.”
Sin will be exposed – found out.
Numbers 32:23 NKJV “But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure your sin will find you out.”
Sin will be punished. Each person will be judged.
Jeremiah 17:10 NKJV “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.”
Romans 6:23 NKJV “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Revelation 20:11-15 NKJV “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.
And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.
The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.
Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.”
Sin can be forgiven – God provided a way of forgiveness.
Ephesians 1:7 NKJV “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”
1 John 1:9 NKJV “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 NKJV “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
