Jesus Helped Those In Need

Life Application: Jesus cares about our sufferings.

Bible Text:

Matthew 9:35-38

Matthew 4:23

Matthew 8:16

John 16:33

John 3:15-17

Compassion is defined as a sympathy for the suffering of others that prompts you to help. Jesus is very compassionate. His compassion for man caused Him to help those in need.

Matthew 9:35-38 NIV

“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.’ ”

Compassion Caused Jesus To Heal The Sick

People were presented to Jesus with bad physical problems. Some were blind, some were deaf, some were hungry, some were sick, some were unable to walk, and some were dead. The Bible tells us that Jesus met all their needs.

Matthew 4:23 NIV

“Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.”

Matthew 8:16 NIV

“When evening came, many who were demon possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.”

To the blind, He gave sight. Once by making mud with spit and dirt and putting it on a man’s eyes. To the dead, He said, “Get up”. To those unable to walk, Jesus said, “Rise and walk.” There was no physical problem that Jesus was not able to overcome.

Compassion Caused Jesus To Deliver Those Possessed By Evil Spirits

As Jesus walked among the people, He met those who were possessed by evil spirits. When He saw them, because He had power over evil, He drove the demons away. The evil spirits left instantly, and the people were able to think clearly after Jesus delivered them.

Matthew 8:16 NIV

“When evening came, many who were demon possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.”

Compassion Caused Jesus To Meet People’s Emotional Needs

Jesus told His disciples not to be troubled or worried or upset. Jesus wanted people to live peaceful lives.

John 16:33 NIV

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart ! I have overcome the world!”

Compassion Caused Jesus To Meet People’s Spiritual Needs

Jesus’ ultimate provision for people, however, is that of meeting their spiritual needs. Since the time of Adam and Eve, people have needed forgiveness from sin. With His sacrificial death on the cross, Jesus provided this necessary deliverance once and for all. His deliverance is for all people and for all time. There is no one who cannot receive it.

John 3:15-17 NKJV

“ that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”
