Prayer is communicating with God. When you go to God in prayer, you do not go to a stranger or to someone that does not care about you. Nor do you go to a statue that cannot see or hear, or to some impersonal deity who needs to be appeased by you. God is you father who reaches out to you in love, goodness and kindness. He knows every detail of your life and He wants you to share them with Him. He wants you to communicate with Him.

Jesus’ disciples knew that prayer was important in communicating and having a relationship with God. They also knew that prayer was powerful in moving God’s hand and changing their hearts, but when it came right down to it, they didn’t know how to pray. So, they asked Jesus to teach them to pray. In response to their request to teach them how to pray, Jesus gave them an example of how to pray. We call it the Lord’s Prayer. It is a model for our prayers.

Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV

“In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come.

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our debts,

As we forgive our debtors.

And do not lead us into temptation,

But deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

Address and Praise God

Jesus opens His prayer by addressing God, then Jesus praised God.

Matthew 6:9 NKJV

“In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.”

God deserves our praise for all He’s done for us, but also for who He is. Even if God never did anything for us, He would still be worthy of our praise. However, God is a good God, and He does so much for us. We should give Him the praise that He deserves. When we worship God, we glorify Him and prepare our hearts to hear from Him through our prayers.

Pray For God’s Will Be Done

When we pray we need to pray that God’s will be done, that His kingdom would be established in our lives. God’s will is done when we give Him priority and make decisions out of a desire to please Him. We need to also pray for God’s will to be done in our families’ lives, our church, and our nation.

Matthew 6:10 NKJV

“Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.”

Pray For The Needs Of Others and Ourselves

The next thing that we do is to pray for the needs of others, then ourselves. At the end of the pray, Jesus praise God again. God loves for us to come to Him in prayer and share our lives with Him. The Bible tells us that God delights in the prayers of the upright or righteous.

Matthew 6:11 NKJV

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

Pray For Forgiveness

Proverbs 15:8

“The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight.”

Matthew 6:12 NKJV

“And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.”

It is important for us to ask for forgiveness when we pray. Sin keeps us from coming into fellowship or friendship with God. The Bible says that if we have sin in our lives and do not forgive others, God will not hear our prayers. If you want God to forgive you then you must forgive others.

Psalm 66:18

“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear.”

Proverbs 15:29

“The Lord is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayers of the righteous.”

Pray For Strength

Matthew 6:13 NKJV

“And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one…”

In the model of Jesus’ prayer, He prayed that when we are tempted that God will give us the strength to resist, and to help us not to fall into the same sin again.

1 Corinthians 10:13

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

To resist temptation we must first submit to God. Next, resist the devil, and He will flee from you. If we try to resist the devil (and temptation) in our own strength, we will fail. But if we rely on God’s strength and ask Him to help us resist the devil (and temptation), we will be victorious. God has already defeated Satan, and greater is He (God) who is in us than He who is in the world.

James 4:7-8

“Therefore submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners: and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

Don’t wait until you are faced with a specific situation that might be tempting—-ask God everyday to give you strength so that when you are faced with a temptation, you will be ready.

Pray that God will give you the strength to resist temptation so that you don’t fall into the same sin again. God’s Word doesn’t say that we won’t be tempted to sin, but it does say that when we are tempted that God has already provided a way out for us.

Thank God

After we resist temptation, we need to draw close to God. We start our prayer by coming into God’s presence and worshiping and praising Him for who He is and for what He has done. Now we need to draw close to Him again with worship and thanksgiving. Thanking Him for what He has done and in faith, thanking Him in advance for what He is going to do.

Matthew 6:13 NKJV

“…Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

The Lord’s Prayer- Matthew 6:9-13

Matthew 6:9-13 NIV

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

When we look at the Lord’s Prayer we can see that we should pray for several things.

1. Praise / Worship

Praise God for who He is and for what He has done.

2. God’s will to be done / Submission

Pray for God’s will to be done in your life, world, family, the situations that you are praying about……

3. Needs

Present the needs of others to God, also present your needs to God.

4. Forgiveness

Ask God to forgive you of your sins and you must forgive others. Sin keeps us from coming into fellowship with God. We must ask Him to cleanse us and to forgive us so that we can have a relationship with Him. But, we must be willing to forgive others ! It is very important to forgive others.

5. Resist Temptation

Pray that you will overcome temptation.
