DIE TO YOUR OLD WAYS

Memory Verse: Matthew 3:8

Life Application: What is happening on the outside of us will reflect the change within us.

Bible Text:

Matthew 3:8

Romans 8:12-14

Galatians 5:19-21

I Corinthians 15:31

Galatians 5:16-17

I Peter 2:11-12

Romans 7:15-20

Repent means to recognize the wrong in something that you have done and be sorry about it. It also means to feel regret about a sin or past action, and change your ways or habits. It does not mean being sorry that you were caught in a sin, instead you are sorry that you sinned against a holy God. Your actions will line up with your feelings. If you are truly sorry, you will change. You will bear fruits worthy of repentance. What is happening on the outside of us will reflect the change within us.

Matthew 3:8 NKJV

“Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance”

If you are dead to the sin that Satan or other fallen angels (demons) are trying to tempt you with, you won’t take the bait.

Romans 8:12-14 NKJV

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”

Works of the flesh are positive proof ( evidence) that a person is not living under the influence and the power of the Holy Spirit, but is living under the influence, control and direction of Satan and is being energized (powered) by him. They are living in bondage – they are not living in the freedom that Jesus Christ has given us.

Galatians 5:19-21 NKJV “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

We must die daily (deny) our selfish, sinful desires. Each day, we must refuse to give in to our soulish desires.

I Corinthians 15:31 NKJV

“I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily”

Our flesh and our spirit are at war with each other. If we allow our flesh free reign it will direct our choices. Your flesh will cause you to do things that you really don’t want to do.

Galatians 5:16-17 NKJV

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”

I Peter 2:11-12 NKJV

“Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.”

Romans 7:15-20 NKJV

“For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.”

Remember, what you feed the most will rule you. If you want your spirit to have rule over you and not your flesh, you must feed your spirit more than you feed your flesh!
