JARIUS' DAUGHTER HEALED

Memory Verse: Mark 5:42

Life Application: Jesus has power over death.

Bible Text:

Matthew 9:18-26

Mark 5:21-43

Luke 8:40-56

One day when Jesus arrived in Capernaum He was greeted by a multitude of people who were waiting for Him. As Jesus was speaking to the people a man named Jairus approached Jesus. His twelve year old daughter was very sick and about to die. Jairus asked Jesus to come with him and lay His hands on his daughter and she would be made well.

Matthew 18-19 NKJV

“While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.”

Jairus was an important man in Capernaum. He was one of the rulers of the synagogue, and his job was supervising the worship services that took place in the synagogue. Like many of the Jewish leaders, Jairus was very aware of Jesus’ miraculous powers. Jairus was a desperate man. He had a great need and he knew that his only hope was in Jesus.

As Jesus was on His way to Jairus’ house they were approached by some people from Jairus’ house and told them that the girl had died and not to trouble Jesus any longer. When Jesus heard what the people had to say, He told Jairus not to be afraid and to believe. Jesus did not want Jairus to believe the report that the people gave him, instead Jesus wanted Jairus to believe in Him and not to be worried about what he had heard.

Mark 5:35-39 NKJV

“While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.”

After this Jesus allowed only three of His disciples (Peter, James and John) to continue with Him to Jairus’ house. When they arrived at Jairus house there was a lot of commotion. The people were crying (very loudly) over the girl’s death. Jesus asked the people why were they causing such a commotion, and that the girl was only asleep.

Luke 8: 51-54 NKJV

“When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl. Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, “Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.”
And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead. But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.”

The people laughed at Jesus because of what He said and they made fun of Him. Jesus then made all of the mourners get out of the house and He went into the room where the girl was laying. Peter, James, John, and the girl’s parents went into the room with Jesus.

Mark 5:40-42 NKJV

“And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement.”

Jesus took the girl by her hand and told her to get up. Immediately upon hearing the words of Jesus, the girl arose and began to walk around the room. Her parents were amazed.

Jesus instructed the parents to give the girl some food and for them not to tell anyone what had happened. By not telling what happened it would give Jesus time to leave the area. Jesus did not want to be known as just a miracle worker. And he did not want the people seeking Him for the wrong reasons.
