ABIDING IN THE VINE

Memory Verse: John 15:5

Life Application: I must abide in Christ to produce fruit.

Bible Text:

John 15:5

John 15:4-5

1 John 2:6

John 15:1-2

John 15:6-8

Galatians 5:22

Abide means to dwell, to live or reside in a place. As a believer we must abide in Christ in order to experience normal Christian growth and maturity. If we abide in Christ we will produce (bear) much fruit.

John 15:4-5 NKJV

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

When a person abides in Christ, He is their source of life and strength. They live in Him and that gives them the power to resist Satan. Abiding in Christ is a person’s only source of power and strength. As a Christian abides in Christ they begin to take on His nature – they begin to walk as He walked. They like the things that He liked, they hate the things that He hated, they have the same burdens, desires, love and compassion that He had.

1 John 2:6 NKJV

“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.”

The Gardner

A gardener takes care of his flowers, trees, and plants. He will give them whatever they need in order to thrive and produce good fruit.

* Pruning

A gardener prunes his trees and plants so that they will grow more and produce much fruit. And for the branches that are producing, they are pruned so that they will bear even more fruit.

John 15:1-2 NKJV

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”

God is the Vinedresser (Gardener) and He prunes us so that we will grow more (and stronger) and so that we will produce more fruit in our lives. In our lives there are, and will be, things that God prunes away in order for us to grow closer to Him. These things are not always sin. They can just be things that are a hindrance to our relationship with Him and to our fruit bearing in our lives.

* Light

A gardener gives his plants and trees the proper amount of light in order for them to live and grow. God is the Vinedresser (Gardener) and He gave us His Son to be our light. Jesus Christ, is the Light of the World. We need Him in our lives in order to truly live and grow.

*Water

A gardener gives his plants and trees water. Without water they would shrivel up and die. Water is essential for their growth. God is the Vinedresser (Gardener) and He gave us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is like water to us. He is the Living Water. We need Him raining down upon and in our lives. We need His presence every day and everywhere.

*Nourishment

A gardener ensure that his plants and trees have good soil and nourishment. God is the Vinedresser (Gardener) and He gave us His Word. The Word of God (the Bible) is our nourishment. It is our spiritual food.

Blessings and Dangers Of Not Abiding In Christ

John 15:6-8 NKJV

“If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.”

When a believer truly abides in Christ, and His Words abide in them, their prayers will be answered. God will be made known (glorified) by our fruit when we abide in Christ. The world will know that you are a disciple of Christ by your fruit.

Galatians 5:22 NKJV

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control.”

A branch that is cut off from the vine will wither and die. The same is true with man. If a person is cut off from the vine (Jesus Christ) they will wither and die also. Eventually they will be cast away from the presence of God.

We Must G.R.O.W.

* G – Go to church. We are instructed to meet with fellow believers. This meeting does not always have to take place in a “church building”. Believers are the body of Christ, they are the Church and you can meet with each other anywhere and at anytime.

* R – Read God’s Word and pray.

* O – Obey God’s Word.

* W – Watch for a way to be a witness.
