Genuine Or Counterfeit

genuine of counterfeitMemory Verse: Matthew 13:29

Life Application: The church is God’s field and in it there are both wheat and tares.

Bible Text:

Matthew 13:24-30

Jesus gave the parable of the wheat and tares in order make a point about the individuals in the church, the body of Christ. In the parable a man sowed good seed in his field, however unknown to the man, while he was asleep his enemy came and sowed tares in his field. Tares, darnel, are poisonous weeds that closely resemble wheat. When the wheat and tares first began to grow they looked alike. The two are almost indistinguishable until fully mature at harvest time. When the tares began to mature the servants went to the owner and asked him if they should go and gather them up. But the owner said, ‘No, if you gather up the tares you will also uproot the wheat with them.” He told them to let both grow together until the harvest. At the harvest they were to gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them. After that they were to gather the wheat.

Matthew 13:24-30 NKJV

Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”

The church is God’s field and in it there are both wheat and tares. He places the “wheat” in the field, however, His enemy (Satan) sows “tares” in God’s field. The genuine believers are the wheat and the tares are counterfeit believers (those who reject Christ). God will allow both to remain in the church and in the world until it is time for harvest. If the counterfeit believers were pulled out before harvest it could hurt, wound, the true believers.

Prior to Jesus’ return to the earth those who reject Christ (publicly or privately) will become more hardened, and those who believe will begin to look more like Christ. Just like the wheat and tares, God will allow both to grow together. At the time of harvest He will say to the reapers (angels), “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.” The believers will be gathered into heaven and the counterfeit believers will be bound and thrown into the lake of fire.
