“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”
1 Corinthians 12:31 NIV
“But eagerly desire the greater gifts.”
God has given the gifts of the Spirit to the Church to strengthen, encourage, and comfort His people. He wants each believer to desire the greater gifts. He also wants each believer to be willing to be used by the Holy Spirit in helping others.
1 Corinthians 14:1 NIV
“Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.”
There are nine supernatural gifts that come from the Holy Spirit. These gifts are also called manifestations of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives gifts for the common good. The nine gifts are: wisdom, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers (miracles), prophecy, the ability to distinguish between spirits, different kinds of tongues, the interpretation of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12:7-11 NIV
“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another the ability to speak in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as He determines.”
These nine supernatural gifts that come from the Holy Spirit are for the purpose of ministering or helping people and they can be put in three categories.
(1) The gifts to know something in a supernatural way are:
the gift of wisdom
the gift of knowledge
the gift of distinguish between spirits
(2) The gifts to speak in a supernatural way are:
the gift of prophecy
the gift of tongues
the gift of interpretation of tongues
(3) The gifts to act in a supernatural way are:
the gift of gifts of healing
the gift of special faith
the gift of miracles
The Holy Spirit also gives other gifts of ministry. Some ministry gifts are: prophesying, serving, teaching, encouraging, contributing to the needs of others, leadership, and showing mercy. These ministry gifts are not as obviously supernatural as the gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12, but they still require the Holy Spirit’s enabling.
Romans 12:6-8 NIV
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve, if it is teaching, let him teach, if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.”
No matter what the gift is, the one who ministers is guided and led by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 14:1 NIV
“Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.”
