In honor of His birth, Jesus was given three gifts from the wise men. These three gifts represented the three “offices” that Jesus would hold. Jesus was a prophet, priest and king. During the Bible time gold was a gift for a king, myrrh was a gift for a prophet, and frankincense was a gift for a priest.

Jesus is the King of Kings.

In addition to being God’s Son, Jesus was a prophet also – He spoke for God.

Jesus is our High Priest – He made the ultimate sacrifice for us.

The Wondrous Star

Matthew 2:1-4 NKJV

“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.”

On the night that Jesus was born wise men who studied the stars discovered a new and wondrous star. These wise men had access to Daniel’s scrolls which contained the prophesy of Jesus.

Seeing the star, they realized a great king had been born. They were so sure that He was the King of Kings that they set out on a journey to find Him. Their journey lasted for several years. Nothing stopped them in their quest to find Him. They didn’t give up searching for Him.

Matthew 2:7-11 NKJV

“Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared.
And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.”
When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

Finally, they arrived at Mary and Joseph’s house. When they saw the young child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshipped Him. Then they presented Him with the gifts that they had brought with them – gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Joseph’s Dream

After the wise men departed, later that night an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. The angel told Joseph to take his family to Egypt and to stay there until he was told to leave. The angel told Joseph that King Herod was looking for Jesus and wanted to kill Him.

Matthew 2:13-14 NKJV

“Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt”

The family arose immediately that night and departed for Egypt and was there until the death of King Herod, then they returned home. The gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus provided for Joseph to take his family to Egypt in order that the prophecy would be fulfilled and that Jesus would live.

Matthew 2:15 NKJV

“and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

Jesus Grew

Luke 2:41-42 NKJV

“His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.”

Jesus continued to grow in wisdom. Jesus and His parents would go to the temple in Jerusalem for each of the Jewish feast and festivals. The temple was an important part of Jesus’ life. Once when they had went to a Passover celebration in Jerusalem, Jesus amazed the scholars with His wisdom and knowledge of the Scriptures. Jesus was about 12 years old at the time.

Luke 2: 43-47 NKJV

“When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers”

After the feast Mary and Joseph left Jerusalem thinking that Jesus was somewhere among their traveling group. When they didn’t find Him they returned to Jerusalem and searched for Him for 3 days. Finally they found Him in the temple listening to the teachers, asking questions, and teaching them. The priest and scribes in the temple knew there was something different about Jesus. They listened to Jesus explain the scriptures in a way that was way beyond His years.

Luke 2:48-52 NKJV

“So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”

When Jesus’ parents found Jesus in the temple He told them that He must be about His Father’s business. From this point on the Bible does not say anything else about Jesus’ childhood.
