God Lights Our Way

god lights our wayGod Lights Our Way

Theme : Lights, glow sticks

Memory Verse : Psalm 119:11

Bible Truth: Hiding God’s Word in my heart will help me not to sin.

1. Open in prayer

2. Introduction

God’s Word is described as light and as a guide for living. Light is a brightness that enables us to see. Light is also something that brings understanding or shows the way. It gives us instructions on how to live as a child of God. It was given to us by God for our own good – not to hurt us, but to help us.

Psalm 119:105  NKJV     “Your word is a lamp to my feet

And a light to my path.”

Psalm 119:11  NKJV    “Your word I have hidden in my heart,

That I  might not sin against You.”

4. Memory Verse

Psalm 119:105  NKJV     “Your word is a lamp to my feet

And a light to my path.”

5. Bible Pledge

Bible Pledge

I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’s holy Word.

I will make it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

And I will hide it’s words in my heart that I might not sin against God.

6. The Bible Is Our Guide  / Instruction Book

Proverbs 6:23  NKJV     “For the commandment is a lamp,

And the law a light;

Reproofs of instruction  are the way of life”

God’s Word is a guide book for living. It gives us understanding and guidance. It enables us to see the path that we are on as well as the path that we should be on. It shows us all that is in store for us as well as the pitfalls and snares that the enemy tries to place in our path.

God’s Word should be our constant companion, always in our minds and hearts giving instructions and directions. When we are not living up to God’s standards the Bible will shine a light on were we need to change. Even when it gives us words of rebuke it shows us how to change and offers words of hope, encouragement and love.

7. GameBottle Toss

Need: two tables and bottles of water

Divide the group into two teams. Line the teams into two rows. Set up two tables a short distance from each group and mark a line three feet away from each table. Give the first person on each team a bottle of water. At the signal the first person on each team will run to the line and toss the water bottle onto a table and get it to land upright. When they do they will run back to their team and the next person will repeat the process. The team that finishes first is the winner.

8. Walk In The Light

As a Christian we are instructed to walk in the light.

Ephesians 5:8-14  NKJV     “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of the light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things that are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says:

‘Awake, you who sleep,

Arise from the dead,

And Christ will give you light.’ ”

9. Game – Tweezers Relay

Need :

1 pair of tweezers for each team

Small breath mints

2 small bowls for each team

Divide the group into teams. Line each team into rows. Place mints and tweezers on tables a short distance from each team. At the signal the first person on each team will run to their table and use tweezers to relocate five breath mints from one bowl to another. They will then run back to their team. The next person on the team will run and do the same as the first person. The process is repeated until everyone on the team has had a turn. The first team to finish is the winner.

10. The Light Of Christ Will Change Us

1 John 1:5 – 7   NKJV     “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

When we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior our position changes. We were once in darkness, evil, but at salvation we become righteous and full of light through Christ Jesus. We were spiritually dead but are made spiritually alive.

God expects our walk to change since our position changed. We must walk worthy of the Lord and the forgiveness that we received. There is no darkness or evil in God. If we truly want fellowship with God we can’t have any in us either. We must have God’s standards and God’s morals. When we hide God’s Word in our heart it will keep us from sinning against God.

John 3:18-21  NKJV     “He who believes in Him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

As we allow God to shine a light into our life it will change us. The Light of Jesus Christ was sent to this world by God the Father so that not none would be lost and that all would receive eternal life. If we believe in Jesus and His name we are not condemned and we receive life instead of judgment.

John 5:24  NKJV     “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”

John 6:40  NKJV     “And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

11. Game – Separate The Candles

Need:

Small boxes of birthday candles – four different colors

8 small bowls (need two sets of four bowls marked with the colors of candles that you are using.)

Divide the children into two teams. Give each child a small box of birthday candles.  Line the teams into two rows. Place 4 bowls on tables a short distance from each team. At the signal the first person on each team will run to their table and put their candles into the correct bowls. They will then run back to their team. The next person on the team will run and do the same as the first person. The process is repeated until everyone on the team has had a turn. The first team to finish is the winner.

12. Jesus Is The Light Of The World

Jesus is the Light of the World. Jesus is the only way to God. Those that do not believe in Jesus or His name are condemned and they will receive judgment. God sent His Son, Jesus, to this world to light the way to Himself. Throughout history and in this present age, people offer many excuses for not accepting Jesus as their Savior and the Lord of their life. The excuses they give are an attempt to hide what is really in their heart. Deep in their heart they do not want to accept Jesus as the Lord of their life. They do not want the light of Jesus to shine in them because if it does it will show them for what they really are – a sinner that does not want to change and who does not want to draw closer to God.

We must never forget that the Light of Jesus Christ reveals sin and enables us to see ourselves as we really are and as God sees us. The true believer, however, welcomes the light of Jesus shining in them. The light will help people see what they need to do in order to draw closer to God.

Ephesians 5:8  NKJV     “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light”

When we accept Jesus as our Savior we are changed. We were once children of darkness and sin but, we become children of the light  and righteousness.

Our new life must reflect that change in us in every area of our lives. We must allow God to light our way.

14. Challenge – Altar

Just as God lights our way, we too should be a light for others. Our lives are a message to everyone we come in contact with. We are to let our light shine everywhere we go. In life people listen more to what we do than what we say.

Matthew 5:14-16  NKJV     “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Through you others will see Jesus. You will either brighten their world or you will darken it by your behavior, your thoughts, your words, and your actions. You have an effect on those around you.

God’s Holy Word

God’s Holy Word

Memory Verse: Matthew 24:35

Life Application: I can depend on God’s Word.

The Bible Is Inspired, Flawless, And Eternal

The Bible is a message, or communication, from God – it is the only book in the world sent to us from God.  The Bible is God’s Word to each of us. It contains history, poetry, letters, and stories.

2 Peter 1:20-21  NKJV    “knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”

God inspired the Bible, which means that God stimulated people to write down His thoughts and words. God’s Word was given so we can know Him. By reading the Bible we know what God thinks and what He wants. God used people to record His Word, but He inspired each  of the 40 different writers through the Holy Spirit. Even with so many different writers, the Bible is flawless and fits together. There were hundreds of years between the time God gave the words for the first book until He gave the words for the last book of the Bible.

2 Timothy 3:16 NKJV    “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”

The Bible is eternal which means it will last forever, exists through all time, unchanging, unaffected by the passage of time, and everlasting. Jesus taught that the Bible, God’s Word, is eternal –  that it will never pass away.

Books, Chapters, And Verses

The Bible is made up of 66 books, and these books are divided into chapters, and verses. These divisions are given to us to help us find certain Scripture passages we are looking for. Also these divisions help us to follow along in a group setting.

Languages And Translations

When the Bible was first written, the writers wrote in Hebrew or Greek languages. First the Old Testament was translated into Greek, later into Latin. The first English version of the Bible was printed in 1384. The King James version was printed in 1611. When the English language changed, other translations were written. The NIV was translated as closely as possible to the original Greek. Some Bibles print the words of Jesus in red letters rather than black letters so we can easily see what Jesus said.

Hide God’s Word In Your Heart

It is important for each person to read and study the Bible. By studying the Bible we will know what God expects from us. We should also hide the Word in our heart by memorizing verses from the Bible. When we hid God’s Word in our hearts it will help us to keep God’s commandments and not to sin against God.

Psalm 119:11  NKJV    “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.”

Hebrews 4:12  NIV    “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart”

As you acquaint yourself with what’s in the Bible through regular Bible reading and prayer it will:

* help you know where to find help when you need it.

* help you learn to recognize God’s voice.

* draw you into a deeper relationship with God.

* guide you in doing what is right, no matter what the situation.

* reveal God’s plan for you.

* show you the steps you should take.

* help you guard against false doctrine and Satan’s temptations.

Psalm 119:33-37  NIV    “Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserving my life according to your word.”

Bible Study Aids

There are several things that will help you as you read and study the Bible. A few of them are: a concordance, Bible atlas, dictionary, and a Bible dictionary. Also in the front of your Bible, you will find a table of contents, and in the back of your Bible you will find a small concordance. Some Bibles contain a subject index, maps, or a glossary in the back.

Concordance – a concordance lists all the scripture references under a word which contains that word.

Bible Atlas – a Bible atlas gives maps of the part of the world where people in the Bible lived. Some maps show how the cities and countries were during Old and New Testament times, and some maps show how those cities and countries are today.

Dictionary – a reference book that contains alphabetically ordered words, with explanations of their meanings.

Bible Dictionary – a reference book that contains alphabetically ordered words, with explanations of their meanings, often with information about grammar, pronunciation, and etymology.

Table of Contents – This page of the Bible will list the books in the Bible and on what page they begin.
