“Once Upon A Time In A Dark Land”

3-25-2014 9;22;21 AM - Copy (2)

Theme:  creation

Memory Verse:  Genesis 1:1

Bible Truth:  God made the world and all that is in the world.

Bible Text:

Genesis 1:1-2:3

John 1:1-3

1. Open in prayer

2. Introduction – Once Upon A Time The Whole World Was Dark

Once upon a time a long time ago the whole world was dark and empty. There was no light to be found anywhere.

As the Spirit of God hovered over the waters He said, “Let there be light.” God is very powerful and what He speaks always happens. At the command of His voice, light filled the world. God called the light areas Day and the dark areas Night. This day became known as the first day of creation.

“It is good,” thought God as He looked out over all the glorious light beaming across the sky.

The next day as God gazed at the waters He said, “Let there be a firmament to divide the waters. All the sudden part of the waters gathered into a liquid state and part of the waters turned into moisture in the atmosphere. Many today refer to this beautiful firmament as the sky or heavens.

“It is good,” thought God as He looked at the blue sky.

The third day brought many lovely colors into the world. For on the third day God gathered the waters into one place and called them Seas. After that God made land appear above the surface of the seas.

“It is good,” thought God as He looked at the land on which He had placed many, many colorful trees and plants.

The next day God placed twinkling stars in the sky. As God thought about His new creation His mind was thinking about what to make that could rule the day and night. A large light was created to rule the day. We call this large light the sun. After that God created something that could rule the night by reflecting light. We know this reflecting light as the moon. The moon emits no light of its own. It only reflects light from the sun.

God said, “Let there be an abundance of living creatures in the sea, and let birds to fly in sky,“ on fifth day. And it was so. As God looked at His new creation it was good and He blessed it.

The next day, God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures.” At that instant all the animals in the world appeared in response to the voice of God.

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit looked at all creation. “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. Let them rule over all creation,” said God. So man was created in the very image and likeness of God.

For six days God had worked creating the heavens and the earth, and every thing in them. On the seventh day God ended His work and He rested. Then God blessed the seventh day because it was the day the He rested from all His work.

So once upon a time a long time ago what was dark and empty became bright and full of life.

4. Memory Verse

Genesis 1:1 NKJV “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

5. God Made The World

God made the world, and all that is in the world, and the entire universe out of nothing. He spoke His Word, and everything came into existence. This is referred to as creation. God created the world in six days.

In the beginning there was God – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. There was no earth, sky, sea, sun, moon , stars, animals, plants or people. Just God and darkness. All three (God the Father, Christ the Son, and the Holy Ghost) were present at creation.

Genesis 1:1-2 NKJV “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

John 1:1-3 NKJV “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

Genesis 1:26 NKJV “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

God spoke in the darkness: “Let there be light!” And right away there was light, scattering the darkness and showing the infinite space.

Genesis 1:1-2 NKJV “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

“That’s good!” said God. “From now on, when it’s dark it will be ‘night” and when it’s light, it will be ‘day’.” The evening came and the night passed and then the light returned. That was the first day.

Genesis 1:3-5 NKJV “Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.”

6. Game -“Kangaroo Hop” Relay Race

Need:

A sign with the Bible verse on it.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Genesis 1:1 NKJV

Line the two teams up in two rows. Tape the sign a short distance from the teams. At the signal the first person on each team is to hop to the front and say the Bible verse, then hop back to their team. The next person on the team will do the same thing. The team that finishes first is the winner.

7. Day 2, 3 and 4 Of Creation

On the second day, God created sky to separate the waters. God made the earth and over it He carefully hung a vast blue sky. God created a great water canopy in the heavens above the earth. This created a green house effect over all the earth. The canopy kept climatic conditions stable which would account for the lack of rain fall which unstable weather condition would cause. Later as recorded in Genesis 6, God opened the fountains of heaven (the canopy) and rain fell on the earth for the first time in the Great Flood. God stood back and admired His creation. “That’s good too!”

Genesis 1:6-8 NKJV “Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.”

The “firmament” here refers to the atmospheric heaven where the clouds are as well as the celestial heaven where the stars are.

God gathered all the water together on the third day, so that dry land appeared for the first time. He put all the water in one place and all the dry land in another. When He had finished that, God made plants to cover the land. All sorts of plants, trees and grasses began to grow.

Genesis 1:9-13 NKJV “Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the third day.”

Then, on the forth day God put lights in the heavens. God created the sun, moon, and the stars. He placed them in the firmament (heavens) to provide light for the earth, and to provide seasons for each year. He made a big light for the day and a smaller light for the night. He also made stars on this day. God made the sun to light the sky during the day and the moon and stars to add a bit of sparkle to the night.

Genesis 1:14-19 NKJV “Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.”

8. Game – Creation Balloon Pop Match-up

Need:

24 balloons

2 large trash bags

Small slips of paper with the following written on them (need 2 copies of each):

Day 1

day and night

Day 2

sky

Day 3

land, mountains, beaches, rivers, lakes, oceans, trees, grass, flowers, plants

Day 4

sun, moon, and stars

Day 5

things in the water and in the air

Day 6

animals, man and woman

Put one slip of paper in each balloon and blow up. Be sure to keep the two sets of balloons separate. Place each set in a large trash bag.

Divide the group into two teams. Place the teams in different areas. Give each team a bag of balloons. At the signal they will open their bag and pour out their balloons onto the floor and begin to stomp on them. The object is to get the slips of papers out of the balloons and correctly match them up. The first team to do so is the winner.

Correct match-up is:

Day 1 – day and night

Day 2 – sky

Day 3 – land, mountains, beaches, rivers, lakes, oceans, trees, grass, flowers, plants

Day 4 – sun, moon, and stars

Day 5 – things in the water and in the air

Day 6 – animals, man and woman

9. Day 5,6 and 7

On the fifth day God turned his attention to the water he had collected in the oceans. God created the fish and all other living creatures in the oceans and the lakes. He also created the birds to fly above the earth.

Genesis 1:20-23 NKJV “Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.”

So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”

On the sixth day God made all the animals that live on the land. It was on this day that God created man, and He created man in His own image. He also created the animals on the sixth day, and He placed man in charge of all the animals. He told man to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. God looked around and was happy with all He had made. After six days, the whole universe was completed

Genesis 1:24-31 NKJV “Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.
Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”

On the seventh day, God ceased from His labor and established the Sabbath. He rested and enjoyed looking at all He had made.

Genesis 2:1-3 NKJV “Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.
And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.”

11. Life Application and Challenge

In the beginning God fashioned everything anew. He changed disorder into order and emptiness into fullness. The heavens and the earth were recreated. What was void, empty, and dark (evil) became full and full of light.

Just by His words, God gave the world physical light. God declared that the light He had created was good, then He named the light and dark. By naming them, God showed He was Lord over them and that He had power over them.

The ultimate goal and purpose of creation was for the divine light of God to shine throughout the world, transforming everything. Even darkness itself was transformed by the light that God created.

God has always divided the light from the dark.

Just as the natural light was separated from the dark, one day the spiritual light (those who have a right relationship with God) will be separated from the spiritual dark (those who do not have a right relationship with God).

Give the children time to pray.

1. Are you in a right relationship with God?

2. Where will you be when God divides the light from the dark?

3. Are you allowing God’s light to shine through you?

12. Refreshments or light meal

13. Crafts

14. Dismissal
