Living In An Ungodly World

living in an ungodly worldMemory Verse: Daniel 1:8

Life Application: We must purpose in our heart to obey God.

Bible Text

Daniel 1:1-9

Daniel 1:6

Daniel 1:8

Daniel 1:15

Daniel 1:17-20

Daniel 6:26-27

Daniel 1:1-9 NKJV

“In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the articles of the house of God, which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the articles into the treasure house of his god. Then the king instructed Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, to bring some of the children of Israel and some of the king’s descendants and some of the nobles, young men in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans. And the king appointed for them a daily provision of the king’s delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and three years of training for them, so that at the end of that time they might serve before the king. Now from among those of the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. To them the chief of the eunuchs gave names: he gave Daniel the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abed-Nego. But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now God had brought Daniel into the favor and goodwill of the chief of the eunuchs”

Many Israelites were taken to the ungodly kingdom of Babylon to become slaves. Some of these men were chosen to serve in the king’s palace. These men were to be young men without physical defect, handsome, intelligent, educated, quick to understand. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were among those chosen to be the king’s servants.

Daniel 1:6 NKJV

“Now from among those of the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.”

Daniel and his friends obeyed God, and God was with them, even though they were surrounded by people who did not know about God. Daniel decided to obey God’s laws and not defile himself with the king’s food and wine. He made a deliberate choice to obey God.

Daniel 1:8 NKJV

“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”

Daniel’s love for God led him to request a special diet of the chief of the eunuchs for his friends and himself. He showed great courage, boldness, and a desire to do what was right. Daniel also had faith that God would help him and his friends. The chief of the eunuchs agreed to Daniel’s request and at the end of the ten day period Daniel and his friends looked healthier than anyone who had eaten the king’s food.

Daniel 1:15 NKJV

“And at the end of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king’s delicacies.”

God blessed Daniel and his friends for doing right. He gave them knowledge, wisdom, the ability to interpret dreams and visions, and the king found them 10 times better than all the wise men in his kingdom.

Daniel 1:17-20 NKJV

“As for these four young men, god gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

Now at the end of the days, when the king had said that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

Then the king interviewed them, and among them all none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore they served before the king.

And in all matters of wisdom and understanding about which the king examined them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers who were in all his realm.”

As a result of standing strong for God, the king recognized Daniel and his friends served a powerful and living God. Their lives were a powerful witness to everyone around them.

Daniel 6:26-27 NKJV

“I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel.

For He is the living God,

And steadfast forever;

His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed,

And His dominion shall endure to the end.

He delivers and rescues,

And He works signs and wonders

In heaven and on earth,

Who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.”

God’s Garden

god's garden

Memory Verse: Psalm 92:12

Life Application: I grow when I am in rightstanding with God.

Bible Text:

Psalm 92:12

John 15:1-6

Psalm 92:12-15

Deuteronomy 6:5

Deuteronomy 11:1

1 Samuel 15:22

John 14:15

Galatians 5:22-23

Matthew 28:19-20

Ephesians 2:10

God’s Garden

God wants us to bear fruit in His garden. The goodness or sweetness of our fruit will depend on how much time we spend with God – in prayer and in His Word.

John 15:1-6 NKJV

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.”

We must abide in Christ if we desire to bear fruit. The Bible tells us that the righteous will flourish.

Psalm 92:12-15 NKJV

“The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
Those who are planted in the house of the Lord Shall flourish in the courts of our God.
They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing,
To declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.”

We are known by our fruit and our fruit will be judged.

Matthew 7:15-20 NKJV

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?
Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Therefore by their fruits you will know them.”

Fruit

God wants the fruit of our love toward Him.

We are to love the Lord with everything within us.

Deuteronomy 6:5 NKJV

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”

Deuteronomy 11:1 NKJV

“Therefore you shall love the Lord your God, and keep His charge, His statutes, His judgments, and His commandments always.”

God wants the fruit of obedience in our lives.

Obedience is important to God. He tells us in His Word that obeying is better than sacrifices.

1 Samuel 15:22 NKJV

“So Samuel said:

“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,

As in obeying the voice of the Lord?

Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice”

Jesus tells us that if we really love Him we will obey His words.

John 14:15 NKJV

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”

God wants the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

Believers should have spiritual fruit in their lives.

Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

God wants the fruit of reproduction in our lives.

God wants us to win souls for Christ. As a Christian we should “produce” other Christians.

Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age”

We are instructed to go into all the world and make other disciples (followers of Christ), and we are to teach them to obey God’s commands, laws and words.

God wants the fruit of good works and deeds in our lives.

Works and deeds do not save us, however our works and deeds will show what we believe.

Ephesians 2:10 NKJV

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Shinning Stars

shinning stars

Theme: Stars, Night time sky, Light

Memory Verse: Philippians 2:14-15

Bible Truth: God had called us to shine no matter where we are.

1. Open in prayer

2. Introduction – Reflective Light

The dictionary describes light as a brightness that enables us to see. It brings understanding or shows the way. As Christians we are to be a light for Jesus. We are to let our lights shine for Jesus in everything that we do and say. There are many ways that we can let our lights shine for Jesus. God has given each of us gifts that can be used to point people to Him.

Without light we have no way of seeing in the dark. Without the light of Jesus Christ the world has no way of “seeing” in this dark, sinful world. That is why God has called us to be light to the world. The light of Christ within us should penetrate the spiritual darkness around us. As Christians, we do not have any light of our own. We are only the reflective light of Jesus Christ. We are the light of the world as long as we reflect Jesus Christ. We must make sure that nothing comes between us and the light of Jesus Christ. If sin comes between you and God, you cannot reflect Jesus.

Colossians 1:12  NKJV

“…giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

Each Christian has been delivered from spiritual darkness. Because of their deliverance from darkness each one has a testimony and they should be ready to give it. We should never hide what God has done for us. Other Christians are encouraged by our testimonies. The Bible tells us that we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.

Just because a person is a Christian it does not mean that they will not struggle with things. What God has delivered you from can help someone else that is faced with the same thing. Your deliverance can be light to someone else.

Matthew 5:16  NKJV

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

3. Praise and Worship Songs-

4. Memory Verse

“Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.”    Philippians 2:14-15

5. The Light Within Me

In Philippians 2:12-18, Paul exhorts the believers to continue to obey God and to totally submit to Him. He encourage the Christians to become pure and without fault in the midst of a “crooked and depraved generation” so that they would be able to “shine like stars”, to stand out and be able to share the Good News.

The Bible challenges us to live godly lives, even when we are going through suffering, trials, temptations, tests, or persecution. Circumstances must never effect or alter godly principles, morals, or convections.

Philippians 2:14-15      “Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.”

We are to “shine as lights” to two different groups of people, the lost and the saved.

Matthew 5:14-16  NKJV     “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

6. Game – Jig-Saw Puzzle Race

Need: card stock and baggies.

Copy the Bible verse on pieces of card stock. You will need a copy for each person playing the game.

After verse is copied, cut each one into 8 pieces and place in a baggie. Be sure to keep each puzzle separate.

Divide the group into two teams. Line up the two teams in lines. Place the baggies with the puzzle pieces a short distance in front of the lines. At a signal the first person on each team must go to the puzzle pieces and open one of them, and put their puzzle together. Once the puzzle is together they must read it out loud, then place the puzzle back in their bag and run back to their team. The next person will do the same.

The team that finishes first is the winner. The children should take their memory verse puzzle home with them.

7. Light To The Lost

Light is a brightness that enables us to see. Light brings understanding or shows the way.

Matthew 5:14  NKJV

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Without light we have no way of seeing in the dark. Without the light of Jesus Christ the world has no way of “seeing” in this dark (sinful) world. We are to be the light of the world.

Philippians 2:14-15  NKJV

“Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.”

The light within us (the light of Christ) should penetrate the spiritual darkness around us. We do not have any light of our own. We are the reflective light of Jesus Christ. As we behold the glory of the Lord, we reflect it. We are the light of the world as long as we reflect Jesus Christ.

We must make sure that nothing comes between us and the light of Jesus Christ.

8. Light To The Saved

Not only are we to be a light to the lost in a dark world, we are to be a light to those in the “house” also. In other words, we are to be a light to our fellow Christians.

Matthew 5:15  NKJV

“Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.”

Light indicates deliverance from darkness.

9. Game –  Gifts and Needs Match-Up

Need: 8 pieces of paper.

On 8 pieces of paper write the following sentences – one sentence per sheet of paper:

Jazmine loves to sing.

The Kid’s Church  is looking for children to sing in a choir.

Mariah loves to bake.

The visitation committee is looking for people to bake cookies for them to take to the homes of visitors.

Hannah likes to work in the yard.

The park has large flower beds and is in need of someone to help take care of them.

Bianca is good with animals.

A family friend needs someone to take care of their dog while they are out of town.

Pick eight children to play this game. Tape a piece of paper on each of the players backs. At the signal they must find the correct match for the sentence on their back. They may ask the other people in the class what the paper on their back says.

Correct Matches

Jazmine loves to sing. / The Kid’s Church  is looking for children to sing in a choir.

Mariah loves to bake. / The visitation committee is looking for people to bake cookies for them to take to the homes of visitors.

Hannah likes to work in the yard. The park has large flower beds and is in need of someone to help take care of them.

Bianca is good with animals. /A family friend needs someone to take care of their dog while they are out of town.

10. Creating A Thirst

Matthew 5:13-16  NKJV

“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Salt is a white substance used for seasoning and preserving. Pure salt maintains its flavor. We are to be a seasoning and a preservative for a lost world. There should be something in each one of us that God can use to “season” each other and to “preserve” the lost.

In Israel some salt was mixed with other ingredients. When the salt was exposed to (mixed with) these other things, the salt would loose its flavor over time. When this happened the salt was no longer good for (fit for) its intended purpose. It would be thrown out.

11. Game – Keep The Path Clear Between You And Jesus – Obstacle Course

Matthew 5:14  NKJV

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Without light we have no way of seeing in the dark.

Need: Objects that can be used as obstacles in setting up an obstacle course. Some items that can be used are small tables, safety cones, toys and folding chairs.

Using several objects set up two obstacle courses. Divide the group into two teams and line them up in rows. At the signal the first person on each team will run their course then back to their team. The next person in line will repeat the process. The team that finishes first is the winner.

12. Seasoning

A seasoning is something that gives a better flavor (makes better). It is also something that gives interest or character. Salt  gives liveliness (full of life and spirit, active, vigorous, exciting, bright, vivid, and cheerful).

As the salt of the earth we should affect those around us in a positive way. We should stir up (provoke) good in others – good works and good behavior.

Hebrews 10:24-25  NKJV

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

13. Preservative

Preserve is to keep from harm or change, to keep safe, to protect, to keep up, to maintain, keep from spoiling. As Christians we have been “preserved” from the things of this world (evil) and from the things to come (the wrath of God, tribulation, judgment).

Revelation 3:10  NKJV

‘Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.”

14. GamePass the Light Relay Race

Need: Two flashlights or glow in the dark sticks.

Divide the class into two teams. Each team is to line up in a row. Hand a light to the first person in each row. They are to pass the light to the person behind them and tell them something that God has delivered them from….. and so on. When the light gets to the last person in each row they are to run to the front of the line and pass the light to the person behind them and so on. When the original first person is back in the front of the line the game is over.

15. Worship Song – ___________________________

16. Challenge / Altar – Inheritance and Responsibilities

Colossians 1:12  NKJV

“…giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

With every inheritance comes responsibilities. Christians have a responsibility to be a light everywhere they go and in everything they do.

Matthew 5:16  NKJV

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Should we not desire for others to be preserved also? It is our responsibility to let others know how they too can be saved. We can do this by letting our lights shine for Jesus.

Just as salt in the natural realm will make a person thirsty, “salt” in the spiritual realm will make a person thirsty for the living water (the Word of God, Jesus Christ).

Everything we do and say should point people to God. When people look at us they should not see us, instead they should see Jesus shinning through us.

There are people watching each and everyone of us. May what they see be the “light” that they need to created a hunger for God and the things of God. As the heavenly bodies shine forth  in brightness against the blackness of the night, so the lives of true Christians lighten the moral darkness of the world.

Is what people see in you creating in them a thirst for God?

Are you living up to your responsibilities as a Christian?

Are you a light everywhere you go and in everything you do?

Are you pointing  people to God?

When people look at you do they see Jesus shinning through you?
