THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE

Memory Verse: John 8:34-36

Bible Truth: Jesus Christ sets us free.

Through Jesus we are free from the fear of death, free from our sins, free from being alone, free to have a new life.

John 8:34-36 NKJV

“Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.
Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

I. WE DO NOT HAVE TO FEAR DEATH

There are people that have not heard the truth about God’s hope for today and tomorrow – His Son, Jesus Christ.

John 3:16 NKJV

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”

They do not know that their sins can be removed so they live under the weight of their transgressions. Spiritual darkness and dread on their final day is their existence, never understanding that freedom from sin comes through faith in Jesus Christ and that death isn’t to be feared.

Acts 4:12 NKJV

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Believers don’t fear the One who takes away sin. Instead, they look to Jesus Christ for their salvation, knowing that through Him their wrongdoings have been pardoned at the cross. We can have forgiveness and hope beyond the grave. When the end comes for believers they will be welcomed into the presence of their loving Lord; instead of an end, it is a beginning.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also”

II. WE ARE FORGIVEN THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

The Bible tells us that only Jesus Christ has the authority to forgive sins; that God sent His Son into the world not to condemn but to remove the burden of sin and the shame. Sadly, this truth is lost on many people – young and old. There no sin is so great that God will not forgive. When a person asks for forgiveness their soul is flooded with relief. God promise, “Come to Me and I will give you rest” is available to every one. Even though there may be hidden sins that create a burden of guilt, God is ready to offer forgiveness and fill our heart with peace. All we have to do is ask.

Questions and Fill-In The Blanks – Part II.

1. Many people carry a heavy burden of guilt because of sin. Why do you think they refuse to reveal their sin to God?

Isaiah 26:3 NKJV

III. GOD IS WITH US ALWAYS

Being a child of God doesn’t guarantee that we won’t face trouble in our lifetime. However, God’s comfort and loving-kindness is in the midst of our hardship. So when trials happen – and they will – God promises to be with us now and forever. But whatever the crises – serous illness, financial loss, domestic abuse, or impending death – God promises to be at our side.

Matthew 26:36-45 NKJV

“Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.”
And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.
Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.”
And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.
So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.”

When we pray, God hears our pleading just as He heard Jesus’ prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane. Nonetheless, Christ obeyed His Father’s will and faced the cross knowing that God’s love surrounded Him.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.”

IV. A NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

Instead of seeking God as a pathway to forgiveness, there are many that turn to myths and New Age philosophies. These cults present ideas as truth that do not agree with the Bible but are adhered to by many, including prominent figures. These people never acknowledging their evil deeds or truly repent. We only have to look at news accounts of groups who have followed beliefs that took control of their lives. In each account their belief system and leader failed them. Instead of myths and New Age philosophies, we need to base our belief system on God’s Word. There we learn that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. And when we accept God’s gift of salvation, we are changed, made whole, and given a new purpose. It’s a new way of living – one that is filled with joy.
